Young Euro Classic
August 18 – September 3, 2017 Konzerthaus Berlin
The 2017 programme proves: Young Euro Classic is and remains unique as a festival of the world’s best youth orchestras. In the 18th year of its existence, Berlin’s Konzerthaus will present not only beloved “regulars”, but new orchestras as well, for example the Asian Youth Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Cuban-European Music Academy (CuE). The former, featuring musicians from eleven East Asian countries, already looks back on 25 successful years, while the CuE only began bringing young Cuban and European instrumentalists together in 2015.
Internationality beyond all borders is one of the defining characteristics of this festival season. The Konzerthaus stage will see the return of such intriguing youth orchestras as the I, Culture Orchestra and the Baltic Sea Philharmonic. Audience magnets such as the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester and the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra also make repeat appearances at the festival.
Musically, the programme offers a diverse range of music of the past 70 years: from Olivier Messiaen to Philip Glass, from the Estonian Arvo Pärt to the Japanese Toshio Hosokawa. And of course the eternally modern classic Ludwig van Beethoven, whose oeuvre is performed by many youth orchestras. Highlights also include a musical journey undertaken by the O/Modernt Kammarorkester, merging Western sounds with an Indian tabla player. Then there is a brand-new soundtrack for the oldest animated comic strip in film history, performed by the National Youth Orchestra of Germany. And so much more!
